Common Bathroom Pests
There is a very long list of pests that are most bothersome in the bathroom. This blog discusses the most common bathroom pests and why they are there.
Earwigs – Dermaptera –
We commonly call them pincher bugs because of their two large pinchers on their tail. You often find pincher bugs in bathrooms because of the water. They are very drawn to damp conditions. They are not dangerous, and no, they don’t eat your brains by entering your ear. They eat plants and prefer to eat dead and decaying plant material.
Sowbugs – Oniscidea –
Rolly pollies or Pill Bugs are not even insects. They are crustaceans. Like the Earwig, they are found in bathrooms, damp basements, and kitchens because they thrive in humid environments. They eat decaying vegetation.
Silverfish – Lepisma saccharina –
Silverfish are nocturnal insects that scurry about looking for food. They eat carbs and are attracted to sugar. You find them in the bathroom because they like damp environments. You may also find them in refuse piles outdoors, in the kitchen, and wet basements.
Scorpions – Scorpiones –
There are many species of scorpions in the local area. Scorpions are hunters, and they subdue prey using venom. Some scorpions are very deadly, while others have venom that is mildly painful but not life-threatening. Scorpions are attracted to bathrooms due to water. They need some water every day or so to survive, but the main reason you find them in a home is that they are hunting prey or looking for mates.
Cellar Spiders – Phoicidae –
There are a few species, and most commonly, we see the long-legged cellar spider. At their most dangerous, they are obnoxious. They hang in most corners, trying to catch small flies and mosquitoes. They can overrun a house quickly, though, and their young are almost invisible to see.
Wolf Spiders – Lycosidae –
Wolf spiders do bite, but their venom is not a medical concern. They are lone hunters who roam the local environment looking for insects. They come in a range of sizes and take on very small to gigantic insects. If you find one in your bathroom, they are hunting or looking for mates.
Cockroaches – Blattodea –
Everyone’s favorite pest, the cockroach. You see them in showers because they roam around looking for food or mates. They eat decaying food and dead things. Most horror movies have at least one cockroach in it because they make our skin crawl. They are drawn to wet environments but prefer the kitchen. You may also find them in the yard, garage, and basement.
Frogs – Salientia
From time to time, you find a frog in the bathroom. They are not a pest, but they can freak out people. Frogs and Toads are Common, but not necessarily in the house. You may find them in houseplants, damp basements, and places where there are a lot of insects.
