Silverfish is a small, wingless insect. Its common name derives from the animal’s silvery light grey and blue color, combined with the fish-like appearance of its movements, while the scientific name (L. saccharina) indicates the silverfish’s diet consists of carbohydrates such as sugar or starches. Silverfish are nocturnal insects that resemble fish in their movement and shape. Silverfish can live between two to eight years. [Jackman (1981). “Silverfish”. AgriLife Extension. Archived from the original on 2009-12-12. Retrieved 2009-11-20]
Silverfish don’t commonly live longer than three years. They owe their longevity in part to their ability to survive on just water for up to 300 days. They are also vey fast and outrun many of their predators.
